A look back at 29 years of Backstreet Boys style

Celebrate the holidays in style with the 'festive plaid' and 'light me up' prints.

We spoke with Brian Littrell (before the teammate Nick Carter’s younger brother Aaron Carter dies), about the evolution of personal style over the Backstreet Boys’ 29-year history, and it revealed a journey of empowerment. Thinking back to the start of their larger than life career, the clothes the band wore were selected for them with minimal input from the boys themselves. “We just got thrown into this thing. “Hey, come here, take this picture, wear this, do that,” he recalled, noting how little control they had over their image at the time. “If you look at these photos from the 90s, you’ll see the Backstreet Boys have always had crazy stuff, from Tommy Hilfiger and Versace to wetsuits, onesies and motorcycle gear. We’ve done it all!”

These days, he and his bandmates have a lot more agency in the way they dress, allowing each of their personal styles to emerge in interesting ways. The one thing Littrell never sacrificed? Her preferences on wardrobe essentials. “I’ve always been picky about socks and underwear,” he says. “I really don’t know why, other than it’s the closest things to you.”

There are lessons you learn with a lifetime of traveling the world, and being comfortable might be one of the most important. That’s why a partnership with MeUndies seemed so natural for the band. “For me, fashion is all about comfort, and with MeUndies, they’re super comfortable. The fabrics are amazing, soft and breathable,” Littrell says. “It’s a perfect fit.”

Stay cozy this Christmas with MeUndies

Brian Littrell is the model for the buffalo plaid jumpsuit. The print is also available in underwear and sock styles.

The MeUndies collaboration celebrates the release of the band’s latest album, A Very Clandestine Christmas. Inspired by the first single the scrapbook, “Happy Days”, the collection is designed to help you “party like it’s 1999”. The line features five holiday-ready prints. There is a classic Festive blanketwhile the Enlighten me the print features Christmas lights on a green background. The cosmic mistletoe the print features aliens, planets and yes, mistletoe, all rendered in an 80s Space Invaders graphic style. The 80s aesthetic is also found in Piece on Earth print, which features repeated illustrations of pizza slices.

The traditional black and red buffalo plaid is available in 60 different styles including bras, briefs, boxers, dog wraps, socks and more. Littrell likes Buffalo check jumpsuit in particular, praising its soft and stretchy design. “We actually have some free time to go around the world,” he says, “so I can’t wait to sit by the tree in my jumpsuit.”

When it comes to their underwear, the Backstreet Boys mean business. “I’m a slip guy, and MeUndies has some great styles,” Littrell says of her favorite silhouette. As for the other boys’ preferences, you’ll have to find out for yourself, perhaps as an audience member on their highly acclaimed “DNA World Tour.” Littrell laughs as he points out that during one of their mid-show costume changes, bandmates Kevin Richardson and AJ McLean often throw their autographed MeUndies underwear into the audience. “We’ve been struck by so many bras, panties, and stuffed animals over the years,” he says. “It’s our turn to give back.”
