LLast year, when I was still struggling with pandemic-induced anxiety, my best friend Shailu suggested I get a puppy. Shailu herself is a mom to two golden doodles and told me how much having pets has made her so much happier.
According to psychology today, dogs help people be present in the moment. When you play with or walk your dog, that’s what you do because you need to pay attention to your pup, keeping your mind from wandering into foolish territory.
Spending time with a dog can dramatically reduce their negative emotions because they make you feel loved. Numerous studies have proven that dogs make people happier. But how do you make the right choice when choosing a dog?
“Do your research! Don’t buy a dog just because you like the way it looks,” says Serena, an animal care worker with over 20 years of experience. to your lifestyle, which dictates whether you can give the dog the level of activity he needs.
“If you’re an active person, get an energetic dog, but if you’re a homebody, it’s best to pick one that needs fewer walks and lounges well with you,” she adds.

Pranav R. Joshi, a veterinarian with 14 years of experience strongly recommends adopting a dog for its mental health benefits. “Dogs exude an energy towards people that automatically helps because no matter how tired you are, even if it’s for 5 minutes, it can have a positive impact on your mental health,” he explains.
When you come home tired from work and don’t feel like talking to anyone, dogs act as a bridge. They bring families together because even if they don’t talk to each other, they will talk about their furry friends. Experts also encourage teaching children to take care of pets to instill in them a sense of responsibility from an early age.
Having a dog also makes it easier to start conversations, they give you something to talk about. And even though the conversations start with dogs, it encourages people to bond with others over time. Studies found that single men are more likely to date women if they have a dog with them. So your boyfriend best friend might even help you find love.
“Dogs help people become more social and improve their relationships,” adds Joshi who ran Veterinarian for your pet clinic since 2009.
Andrea Schneider started Drea’s Dogsitting LLC in 2019 because of her love for animals, she wanted to spend every day doing it. “Socializing your pup from an early age is an investment in happiness and peace for years to come,” she says, adding that the business has allowed her to get to know more people in her community. Such a practice also helps shape the personality of the dog from an early age.
