I have always loved pizza. But when I was a kid, there were really only two types of pies I was used to: the bland rectangular pieces of cardboard that were served at school and the personal molds that I won with At Pizza Hut RESERVE! program. Needless to say, I read a lot and was obsessed with those miniature slices – overcooked pepperoni and all.

Fortunately, I’ve come a long way since then, and Louisville offers a plethora of pizza options. One is At Jake and Elwood’s, a restaurant on Frankfort Avenue that serves deep-dish pizzas and Chicago-style hot dogs. I sat down with owner John Thurlow to talk about making pizza amid the pandemic.

Originally from Chicago, Thurlow was previously a programmer for the Chicago Trade Exchange. Although he never worked in the restaurant industry, he always wanted to open a Chicago-style restaurant.

The current owner, Karen Orlicki, was always with plants and flowers at the family home on Indiana 2. “I was in 4-H. So that was a start. We had a big garden with peppers, tomatoes. My father had his roses. His father, Stanleycherished and cultivated the roses and cared for them with plenty of natural fertilizer (fish parts).

“We were going with buckets to pick up dead fish along Lake Michigan. Can you imagine children doing this today? said Karine. The fertilizer made spectacular roses. “We knew all the varieties of roses in the garden.” She was well educated.

While food for people gets the most attention in Madison, humans aren’t the only species here with access to premium treats. From 100% meat bites to a cupcake specially designed for puppies, to items with aesthetically pleasing packaging, you’ll find dog treats everywhere. These spots have everything you need to brighten your dog’s day.

Bloom Bakery
Annemarie Maitri, owner of Bloom Bake Shop, is a “big dog lover”. Maitri has two rescue dogs, Kala and Beignet, and she says many customers come to Bloom every day with their puppies. At first, Maitri offered canine visitors a special “Bag O’ Dog Biscuits”, which has become a popular holiday gift. In a natural evolution for the normally human-centric bakery, Maitri decided to create “pupcakes” for dogs as well. Pupcakes are a pet-friendly version of cupcakes that include organic peanut butter, applesauce and pumpkin puree, and peanut butter and cream cheese frosting. Maitri says her dogs love them, as do just about any other furry friend who visits the store. “They have become so popular that we recently had to increase production and offer them every day,” says Maitri. “It really makes all of us at Bloom so happy to also expand our customer base to four-legged friends.” 1851 Monroe St., 608-628-2249, bloombakeshop.com

mad dog mom
Amanda Ballweg became a “crazy dog mom” in 2010 when she adopted Kiara, a Siberian husky with piercing blue eyes. Over the years, Ballweg has learned more about the importance of feeding dogs fresh, raw food. Sadly, Kiara passed away suddenly in October 2019 and Ballweg eventually adopted two new puppies. She wanted to give them the best of everything and started making raw food for them when they were 1 year old. She soon realized that it was also hard to find treats with beneficial ingredients, so she made her own. Ballweg then began giving away the treats to friends and family. “I knew then that I had to share [the treats] with other dog owners, so that their dogs can also benefit from healthy treats,” says Ballweg. Ballweg purchased and created Wisconsin’s first ever dog treat truck – installed at local outdoor events and dog parks. Its treats, called Excite Bites, include jerky salmon, beef liver bites and turkey snacks, and they’re all made without preservatives or additives. Ballweg also sells clothing and accessories, with 10% of purchases going to local animal shelters. “These dogs may have had a rough start in life or are going through a tough time in life right now, but either way, they deserve to be treated well,” says Ballweg. thecrazydogmom.com

Gracie’s Dog Treats
If you’re looking for meat-only dog treats, Watertown-based Gracie’s Doggie Delights is a great option. Gracie Jagler, a woman with Down syndrome and the daughter of Wisconsin State Senator John Jagler, started her business in 2016 and hasn’t looked back since. Gracie Jagler started the company because the Jaglers couldn’t find a job she would enjoy, be challenged, and thrive on. She always loved her three rescued Miniature Schnauzers, so when she had the opportunity to start her own pet-focused business, she couldn’t pass it up. The treats are made with USDA-inspected meat and freeze-dried by the family’s butcher. Gracie Jagler and the family wrap the treats in their house. Treats include delicacies such as beef liver, chicken hearts, and chicken breast. She also sells other items like hand-poured candles, coffee, natural paw balm, t-shirts and water bowls. Her family says they love using the machine to seal packages and even include a hand-signed thank you note with every order. If you’ve purchased a bag of her treats, the Jaglers encourage you to post a photo of your pup on Gracie Jagler’s Facebook page to become part of the state-wide and multi-state “G-Dog” family. country. 920-262-9747, gracesdoggiedelights.com

Lil Pix Dog Treats
A member of the Morris family is a promising entrepreneur, although she may be a bit younger than you think. Claira Morris baked dog treats for years before starting her business, Lil Pix Dog Treats, in late 2020 when she was just 9 years old. Its two varieties of treats, Lily Pumpkin Treats and Pixie Peanut Butter Treats – named after the family dog (Lily) and the dog of a since deceased family friend (Pixie) – are made from all-natural ingredients. . “I love that every time we even pull out the dog treat ingredients, Lily comes running, even though she’s sleeping,” Morris says. “She loves our treats and I love to cook.” Morris has sold more than 600 bags of dog treats since their offering at McFarland Farmers’ Market last summer. Lil Pix will also be available at the McFarland House Cafe and through a porch pickup system at the family’s home. facebook.com/lil.pix.dog.treats

Mandy’s Farm
Mandy Shipler started making beef-flavored CBD treats after her older dog suffered from surgeries. She realized that some CBD companies had counterfeit or bad products, and she wanted to make sure that anyone who wanted these products could buy them safely and with confidence. “I have a huge passion for natural healing with good ingredients; it’s still number 1 for us,” says Shipler. She thinks her dog benefits greatly from the treats, including reducing pain and restoring mobility. Dog treats may also help relieve anxiety, seizures, digestion, and nausea, while offering potential tumor-fighting and diabetes-alleviating benefits. “We all need to support the mental and physical well-being of our animals,” says Shipler. “Your furry friends deserve the best.” 608-609-6690, mandysfarmacy.com

Petphoria
The petphoria began after Grace Wang couldn’t find high-quality dog treats in luxurious packaging for her own dog, Beni or others. Wang’s treats are made with natural ingredients sourced and made in America, with packaging that’s more reminiscent of fancy ice cream than dog treats. “For me, it’s all about branding and aesthetics,” says Wang. “I also wanted our dog treats to look luxurious on anyone’s counter.” Petphoria’s treat flavors are inspired by human favorites but offer their own twist, like Chicken Nugs, Pup-Kin Spice and Sweet and Sour Pork. There are also more classic flavors like Peanut Barker, a crunchy treat with chia seeds, peanut butter, and dried coconut. Wang also makes bandanas and bow ties for furry friends and scrunchies and clothes for their owners. “Seeing the community love and gravitate towards our products has been pure joy,” says Wang. “It’s so nice to connect with everyone and be able to share a piece of Beni and me.” 608-400-4077, shoppetphoria.com

A former vacant betting shop on the outskirts of Cardiff has been turned into a dog-friendly cafe. Coffi Lab, which already has two other premises in Cardiff, has opened its newest site in the Rhiwbina area of the city.

Owned by Cardiff-born James Shapland, who ran Coffee #1 before it was sold to SA Brain & Co, the coffee chain has begun opening locations across the city. The first Cardiff site opened on the High Street in Llandaff in November last year, followed by a Whitchurch site earlier this year.

The Rhiwbina branch of Coffi Lab, on Heol-y-Deri, is the most recent branch to set up in Cardiff, and will open on June 25. The cafe takes its name from the Welsh word for coffee and and Lab a reference to Labradors and its chosen charity, Guide Dogs UK.

The new branch took over the site of a vacant betting shop, transforming the unit into a modern café, complete with fairy lights, a blackboard and outdoor seating. Coffi Lab was inspired by James’s two Fox-Red Labradors, Brynmor and Dylan, and he runs the business alongside his partner Hannah Gillard who works as general manager.

Coffi Lab sponsors guide dogs in memory of family and friends through a partnership with Guide Dogs UK. His first sponsored guide dog for their Monmouth store is Tony, a Labrador cross Golden Retriever puppy born in September and named in memory of James’ father, Tony Shapland.

James has previously said he hopes to open the cafe in “several locations in Cardiff”, and a planning application has been approved for 32-34 Station Road in Llanishen to be turned into another chain of the popular cafe.

On a bright and sunny Saturday morning in Ocean Beach, an unexpected sound echoed above the waves.

High-pitched, playful barking.

It was twice a year in San Francisco Con Corgithe first held since 2019 after pandemic postponements, and hundreds of corgis and their humans came out for a day with friends, running around in Warriors suits, baseball caps and jerseys, their distinctive rears squirming.

The event – popular with corgi owners and fans, well known as the Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite breed — featured several events, including a race, obstacle course and costume contest. The canine conference had everyone smiling as they met new friends and took photos of the best-dressed puppies.

Morgan Zablocki and Alli Jones, who attended their first Corgi Con, wore bright aqua blue Hawaiian shirts to match their corgi, Perry.

“There are so many corgis here, you want to make sure you can easily spot which one is yours,” Jones said, as she watched Perry sprint towards the ocean with the other puppies as fast as their short legs leaped. allowed them.

Further up the beach, dozens of people lined up to take a photo with the most famous pup in attendance – YouTube and Instagram sensation gatsby the corgi – who sat calmly as he posed with hundreds of fans throughout the day.

Amanda Rodriguez, who has been a Gatsby fan for about five years, bought just about every Gatsby-themed item available while she waited in line – a stuffed toy, aprons, a tote bag and more Again.

For her, Gatsby and her owner Ryen Lung, who live in the Bay Area, were an inspiration for how to care for the beloved breed.

“It was really great to see someone from the local community demonstrate how to take such good care of a corgi,” Rodriguez said. Her partner Emile added that they were Gatsby fans before they got their own corgi, Sir Tonka Reyes III, who is 2.

“They really helped us learn and know what we were getting into when we got our corgi,” he said.

For those with furry friends, there were several stalls with local treats and accessories to spoil their pups.

One booth, based in San Francisco pet wants shop, sold a particularly unique offering – a beer for dogs.

“Don’t worry, they’re not alcoholic,” said Aden Berkeley, whose mother Christine Anuszkiewicz owns the shop. The drinks, whose flavors included chicken broth, beef broth and peanut butter, featured playful names like “IPA Lot in the Yard” and “Mailman Malt Licker.”

Samantha and Elden Ostrea bought the peanut butter variety for their corgi, Grizz Lee. He was a little skeptical at first, perhaps expecting his usual water, but soon came back for more.

“It looked so funny,” Samantha said, as Elden poured the drink from the can into Grizz Lee’s dog bowl. “It was like, dog beer? We must have that.

At noon, the corgis and their humans gathered – or attempted to gather, as only a small fraction succeeded – for a deliciously chaotic group photo.

Immediately after, more than a hundred people gathered to watch the dogs race through an obstacle course – dubbed Corgi Ninja Warrior – cheering enthusiastically as the dogs jumped over beams and through hoops, rooting them if they stumbled.

Some in attendance had no dogs at all, but couldn’t pass up the chance to see hundreds of corgis in one place.

Andrew Magie, a self-proclaimed corgi enthusiast, “dragged” three of his friends with him to enjoy the day.

“I’ve been obsessed with corgis all my life,” he said, pointing to his t-shirt, which featured the side profile of a corgi with the dog’s characteristic rear-pointing arrow with the word “buttocks”.

He had been to Corgi Beach Day in Southern California when he lived there, he said, but it was his first Corgi Con since moving to “Northern California paradise.”

“I couldn’t miss that,” he said.

A Southern California pet shelter has added a unique adoption criteria: If you want to bring home a new pet, you must support certain gun control measures.

Thousand Oaks Shelter Hope Pet Shop owner Kim Sill described the new pet adoption requirement from her shelter to a newsletter released earlier this month. She says she has since received threats online and in calls to the store.

“We do not support those who believe the 2nd Amendment gives them the right to purchase assault weapons,” Sill wrote in the newsletter. “If your beliefs don’t match ours, we won’t adopt a pet for you.”

This new requirement was installed just days after a gunman killed 19 children and two staff at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texasand about three years after a gunman killed 12 people in a bar in Thousand Oaks. In his newsletter, Sill said the shooter in that shooting had already volunteered at his shelter.

“The shooter who killed 12 innocent humans at the Borderline Bar came to our store for community service hours,” she wrote. “We believe he had scouted many places and we were one of them. We changed our policy on volunteering after this incident, but now we are confident to go even further than that.

Threshold says Fox 11 the problem is personal to her as she lost her sister to gun violence. In the newsletter, she said that all potential pet owners would be “grilled” on their stance on guns and that, “If you adopt for us and believe in guns, please please bring our dogs and/or cats back, or we will arrange to have them picked up.”

“If you lie about being an NRA supporter, make no mistake, we will prosecute you for fraud,” she wrote. “If you think it’s our responsibility to protect ourselves in public places and arm ourselves with a gun, don’t come to our house to adopt a dog. We have a choice who we work with.”

Sill posted the newsletter on the shelter’s website Facebook page, which has nearly 7,000 subscribers. As you can imagine, the reaction of many Internet users has not been positive. As of Wednesday afternoon, the Facebook post with the link to the newsletter had over 1,200 comments.

“Absolutely pathetic stance. I’m all for having your own opinion and beliefs, but refusing to provide a home for an animal to prove your point is ridiculous,” one user wrote. I hope the IRS will revoke your 501 status if you don’t reverse your decision not to allow someone to adopt based on their beliefs.”

“Kim seems to be missing crayons from her box,” another user wrote. “I’d be damned if someone told me I couldn’t adopt because I owned a gun. You put politics above pets that need homes. Cheers for ignorance, I needed a laugh tonight.

According to Fox 11 report, Sill has received several threatening calls and thousands of emails since the newsletter was published. A lawyer quoted in this article said that Sill was not breaking any law by refusing to allow gun supporters to adopt pets.

Sill did not respond to a request for comment from SFGATE.

“Shelter Hope Pet Shop will in no way continue to operate if we are part of the problem, even remotely,” Sill wrote in the newsletter. “We support teachers, children and businesses that provide services to the public, but we are tired of all the senseless killing.”

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Are you hungry? A new restaurant in downtown Milledgeville hopes to please you.

Miso Hawngry is owned by Amy Mcdade, who is no stranger to owning a business, but a restaurant was a new venture for her.

Mcdade owns a dog grooming shop and when the space next to hers was available for rent, she says she owned the restaurant started as a joke but became real.

“I love to cook. I’m happiest when I’m chopping vegetables, cooking, doing this, that and the other,” she said.

Mcdade spent time trying to figure out the best way to use the space, and his teenage sons gave him the idea to make ramen.

Over the past year, she’s been out eating ramen, talking to owners of other ramen shops, and learning how to make Miso Hawngry something special and new for the community.

“I guess I wanted to make an unknown object more accessible to people who don’t know it,” she said.

The menu will include traditional ramen with tonkatsu, rolled pork, creamy broth and traditional vegetables, but there will also be new items like pork bao and a bowl of super spicy Godzilla ramen.

There will also be dishes inspired by Chinese and Japanese culture.

“Everything in ramen has a reason, you know? The textures and the tastes and the colors and all those things mean something… The ramen is just beautiful the way it’s presented and it’s so delicious when you eat it,” Mcdade said.

Miso Hawngry will have a soft opening this weekend (June 18-19) and plans to open during summer hours next Thursday (June 23). Their summer hours will be Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

They plan to have a bigger grand opening in August. They are located at 120 N Wayne St.
