TAMPA, Florida – Former World Wrestling Entertainment champion and Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista adopted a 3 month old puppy from the Tampa Bay Humane Society.

Sage was initially transported to the shelter with a metal chain hanging from her neck, according to the Humanitarian Society.

The aid company said someone saw Sage eating garbage outside and immediately rushed the dog to the shelter.

The puppy was in tremendous pain, the dog had problems with his skin and overgrown nails, officials said.

“We can’t imagine who would do this to him,” the humanitarian company wrote on Facebook.

The puppy was operated on and that’s when Bautista intervened.

“I will personally hand over $ 5,000 in cash to the person giving information leading to the arrest and conviction of the (expletive) patient responsible for this,” Bautista wrote on Instagram.

Five days later, Bautista said they had no idea who was responsible for the puppy’s poor condition.

Bautista also shared that Sage is recovering from surgery.

The former WWE Champion had better news, he told his Instagram followers he was adopting Sage.

He renamed the new member of the Bautista family from Sage to Penny.

“Adopt, don’t buy,” Bautista said on Instagram.

The Riverhead Town board plans to vote on a proposal to ban the sale of commercially farmed dogs, cats and rabbits by pet stores, according to supervisor Yvette Aguiar, who said the public hearing was now closed.

The vote will likely take place at the board meeting on October 5.

The board heard many comments – for and against – during a Sept. 8 hearing on the proposal. Additional speakers addressed the council at Tuesday night’s meeting. Most comments on Tuesday were in favor of banning the sale of commercially farmed dogs, cats and rabbits by pet stores.

Supporters said it would break the “puppy mill pipeline.”

The Humane Society, an animal welfare organization, defines a puppy mill as “an inhumane high volume dog breeding facility that produces puppies for profit, ignoring the needs of puppies and their mothers.”

City attorney Bob Kozakiewicz previously said there were no recent events or incidents leading up to the proposal.

“This is something that we have been studying for some time in the code review,” he said. “We are aware that there has been a sort of movement in which other jurisdictions have passed similar legislation aimed at trying to put limits on the puppy mill scenario.”

In Tuesday’s meeting, Tina Kinksa of Lake Ronkonkoma said she was tired of seeing the same reports about people buying dogs who get sick.

She urged the board to adopt the proposal.

Jonane Cave of Nesconset said she hoped city council would not grant priority to existing pet stores. She said five states have approved similar laws and more are considering doing so.

City officials say there are only two pet stores in town that would be affected by the proposal.

Keith Lewin, the owner of Puppy Experience in Aquebogue, said during the hearing that it is already heavily regulated. Representatives of Sportsman’s Kennel in Calverton, the other pet store in Riverhead Town, did not attend the hearing.

Kerry Michael of Puppy Mill Free Long Island said the federal government is reducing inspections and only inspecting pet stores once a year.

A Border Collie has been called a “medical mystery” after tricking its owner into believing he could see.

Dave, who is said to be between five and seven, was born completely blind – but it took him his whole life to get a diagnosis.

He spent his life between homes and in rescue centers until Jane Downes, 69, of Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire, adopted him last year.

One of Britain’s top vets, who declared it a “medical mystery”, recently discovered that Dave was born with completely underdeveloped retinas.

Jane, from Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire, said: “Nobody has an answer. It’s just a riddle. It’s really weird. He’s a blind dog who can see.

Dave the border collie

“Maybe it’s a sixth sense, who knows?” He fooled everyone – even me as the owner, I was fooled for nine months. “

When Jane bought Dave from an animal rescue center in February 2020, there were no issues with his eyesight, even after a check-up at the local vet.

Jane added: “He jumped in the back of the car and I drove him home.

“A few people said he had funny eyes, but I just thought he had beautiful eyes.

“A few times he got into things, but I attributed that to the fact that he was a sheepdog who more than likely lived in a barn rather than a house. He wouldn’t be wrong. He would come back. when you called her. “

Dave and owner Jane

But in December, when Dave stumbled upon a walk at a pet store in Cambridge, the store owner suggested to Jane that her dog might be blind.

She took Dave to a specialist vet, where they eventually found out that he was totally blind and that his retinas had never developed, meaning he was blind from birth.

After the revelation, Jane enlisted the help of David Williams from the University of Cambridge, a leading veterinary ophthalmologist, who arranged two obstacle course challenges for Dave and a retina test, which confirmed the diagnosis.

He told a local newspaper: “I see a lot of blind dogs and they all bump into things in ways Dave didn’t see – so right now it’s a mystery medical.

Are you TeamDogs?

“Just because I’ve been doing this for 33 years doesn’t mean I’ve seen it all, and I can’t explain that. In life, you like to think you know everything, but this is not always the case. “

Dave now enjoys running around the house with his new brother Sammy, a two-year-old Border Collie, who joined the family in October.

Jane, who lives with husband Mick, 78, said Dave had a happy and full life.

She added, “He goes straight to his food. He chases other dogs even though he can’t see them. He can jump in the trunk of my car. He walks in puddles.

“On the very rare occasion that he gets into something, he just ignores it and goes on.”

Dave’s only limitation is his fear of going overboard – but Jane isn’t sure if this is due to his blindness or a possible traumatic experience as a puppy.

Made with fabric instead of plastic, the Frisbee for dog Chuckit Paraflight has gained approval from thousands of Amazon buyers – and their dogs. It has a multi-layered nylon interior and a soft rubber edge that buyers say is gentle on their dog’s mouth. Plus, it features bright orange and blue colors, so it’s easy for you to see it if it lands in a hard-to-see place.

The dog toy is not just for the earth. You can use it to play fetch with your dog at the lake, pool and beach, thanks to the frisbee’s floating fabric. And even if your dog doesn’t like water, if you play fetch near a pool or body of water and accidentally throw it in, it will be easier for you to retrieve it.

The frisbee dog has collected over 6,000 reviews on Amazon, with buyers noting that it is durable, soft and “travels well in the air”. Others point out that it is easy to clean and some say they threw it in a washing machine (although they recommend not to put it in the dryer).

Buy it! Chuckit Paraflight Dog Frisbee, $ 7.37 (orig. $ 14.99); amazon.com

Some reviews are calling how far the Frisbee can go – with minimal effort. “This is the perfect dog frisbee. Unlike other frisbees, this thing will cover long distances with a flick of the wrist.” a client wrote. “Also, my dog has a habit of chewing on plastic frisbees and destroying them. I’ve had it for over a month now, and there are only a few puncture marks.”

Normally the dog frisbee costs $ 15, but it’s currently reduced to just over $ 7. So shop the Frisbee for dog Chuckit Paraflight at Amazon before the case disappeared.

Dog owners in the UK have received a warning about walking their dogs with the wrong collar.

Dog walkers were told they could face a fine of £ 5,000 if they walk their dogs without proper identification.

That’s because not putting your name and address on your dog’s tag when you’re in public is illegal and could result in a hefty fine – and even jail time.

Pet owners who walk their dogs without proper identification could actually be sentenced to six months in prison in the worst case scenario.

The Dog Control Act 1992 for Scotland and England states that a dog must wear a collar with the name and address of the owner.

Those who break this rule are considered guilty of a violation of the Animal Health Act 1981, which is “liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 5 on the standard scale ”.

READ MORE: Warning to Brits who buy from Aldi, M&S and Argos

A level 5 fine was previously capped at a maximum of £ 5,000 – but that changed in March 2015.

A spokesperson for DEFRA (Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) said Team Dogs : “For crimes committed after March 13, 2015, level 5 has been removed and all criminal penalties expressed as punishable on summary conviction by a maximum fine of £ 5,000 or more, or expressed as a level 5 fine, are now punishable. a fine of any amount (i.e. unlimited).

“This is because of section 85 of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Suppression of Offenders Act, 2012.

“Therefore, the maximum penalty for summary conviction will be up to six months imprisonment and / or an unlimited fine. “

However, the actual fine imposed is likely to be much lower.

In 2018, a cocker spaniel that was recovered without a collar near Sapcote in the east Midlands was fined its owner £ 50, with costs of £ 50 and a victim surcharge of £ 30 for acknowledging the ‘offense.

Owners should be aware that their zip code must also appear on their dog’s collar or tag, but you are not required by law to include your phone number.

The Flour + Water Hospitality Group (formerly known as Ne Timeas Restaurant Group) will open a new rustic Italian restaurant next month and occupy the space occupied by Central Kitchen for nine years.

After the trauma of 2020, all the closed restaurants struggling to reopen, and all the delayed and muted restaurant openings that followed, there hasn’t been the usual wave of restaurant information that typically occurs in the last third of the year. But this week, we’re learning about changes from Flour + Water and its affiliated restaurants, as chef-owners Thomas McNaughton and Ryan Pollnow say they’re looking to reinvent themselves and become even more rustic and accessible with their latest business. .

“We could have reopened Central Kitchen and that would have been quite good, but [we thought] let’s do something we’re really passionate about, ”McNaughton told The Chronicle.

That something is Penny Roma, which is targeting a mid-October opening in the open-plan indoor-outdoor kitchen space that was Central Kitchen (3000 20th Street in Fla.). The plan is to offer a range of rustic pasta dishes from all over Italy, including agnolotti dal plin and tagliatelle bolognese, as well as fire-grilled steak and antipasti-style vegetable dishes.

Central Kitchen had debuted in 2012 as Flour + Water’s more formal and refined sister restaurant across the street, with Salumeria simultaneously opening next door as a casual, more daytime concept. During the pandemic, the Salumeria space turned into a successful take-out operation called Pasta store flour + water, serving hot and cold sandwiches, salads and snacks during the day, and take-out pasta kits to make at home.

Central kitchen, for its part, reopened briefly last fall like a wine bar with hearty snacks, but it’s been dark since the December closures.

“Covid has allowed us to take a step back and re-analyze everything we do,” McNaughton told The Chronicle. “At Penny Roma, we want to have a dinner party every night.”

The flagship operation, Flour + Water, will also be closing temporarily for a “major” makeover on October 2, and there appear to be plans to make some menu changes there as well, though it’s unclear. McNaughton and Pollnow say they’re looking to serve the neighborhood in a more accessible and affordable way – and that will also include turning Salumeria / Flour + Water Pasta Shop into an over-the-counter wine bar with snacks.

Flour + Water Pizzeria is still going strong in Valencia, after its debut in 2019, and this is where you’ll find more Italian-American fare alongside its pizzas, like meatballs and mozzarella sticks, but it works regardless of that. group of restaurants.

As for the change of group in Flour + Water Hotel Group, McNaughton explains that the main difference is Pollnow’s elevation to the rank of co-leader of the whole group with him. Through a partnership with Heartland Humane Society, new pet owners can redeem a coupon at Animal Crackers after adopting an animal from the shelter. Lindburg said she still sees people walk in with these coupons every day.

While the business side of the pet industry is doing well, new pet owners themselves may be the ones who are struggling. Animal cracker sales manager Miriam Orzol said she has spoken to customers who see behavioral issues with their pets.

Orzol said many people adopted pets while stranded at home and looking for a mate. While she said it’s a good thing overall, pets and owners can run into issues as daily routines change and owners return to work.

Animal Crackers even started curating their selection to include treats and toys related to potential behavioral issues new pet owners face.

For example, the store is expanding its selection of soothing treats. Orzol said new pets may experience separation anxiety as their owners start leaving the house more often than they were when the pandemic started. This can lead to animals chewing on sofas and tearing up pillows and other items around the house.

Orzol believes the United States idealized the idea of having a dog, especially a puppy. As a result, some owners do not always know what they are doing. It’s dangerous to have a pet for the first time during a global crisis, according to Orzol. However, Lindburg added that the pandemic has benefited the adoption process as shelters are no longer crowded and people are forced to wait for an appointment to have a pet.

The land and everything in it attracts all the attention.

The majestic views of pastures and meadows and populations of wild animals, and the hard-working, old-fashioned way of life here, are often what brings photographers and journalists and animal lovers and artists and horsemen advanced and future ranchers and wanderers at Chico Ranch Basin, the 87,000-acre working cattle ranch 35 miles southeast of Colorado Springs.

Being outside here makes you feel small. Everyone around you feels really great.

It has always diverted, naturally, from the little things that go on in the small leather goods on the ranch. Maybe someone was fixing a breeder’s harness or bridle. Or make a present for a little girl. Chat over a beer after a long week. Little by little, it became a kind of social heart of the ranch.

Yet for years everyone at the ranch thought of leather goods so casually that they didn’t consider its potential to legitimately help the business.

This business is the multi-faceted, family-owned ranching operation called Ranchlands, which owns and operates beef operations in the western United States.

It was founded by Duke Phillips, or Big Duke as he is also known, who was born on a ranch in Mexico and has been in the business ever since. By the time he and his family moved to the Chico Basin Ranch in 1999, Phillips had collected tools for leatherworking by learning the need to be able to repair his own equipment.

He also used his skills for fun, making sculpted leather handbags to give to his three daughters. They looked like the kind of saddlebags ranchers could use to carry supplies for a day’s riding. As her daughters wore them like any other handbag, friends started asking how they could get one.

It’s like that Ranchlands Mercantile, the name of leather goods, was born. But it has always sort of been the backdrop to everything that happens in the business. Along with its conservation and education efforts, Ranchlands also manages a hotel branch which organizes unique stays for clients from all over the world.

Over the past couple of years, however, things have picked up speed for Ranchlands Mercantile thanks to the younger generation of the family. Big Duke’s daughter, Tess Leach, 35, part owner and director of business development at Ranchlands, has teamed up with sister-in-law Madi Phillips, 29, to take small leather goods to the next level.

A glance at the store’s website, where they do the majority of sales, shows a sophisticated brand with products you would expect to find in a stylish store in a big city.

Stylish products include items inspired by animal husbandry, such as knife cases, saddlebags and cowboy hats. There are also belts, bracelets, dog leashes, koozies and notebooks. As Leach puts it, these are “fashion items that are just as comfortable in New York as they are on a ranch.”

Vogue, the fashion magazine, used a similar description in a 2019 article on Ranchlands Mercantile, further testimony to the store’s growth.

There is the 15,000 followers on Instagram, too much. They have experienced a peak in growth since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Sales have increased as have their manufacturing workforce, which now stands at six. They have invested more energy in all aspects of the business, especially social media marketing.

“We started to push things in a more intentional way,” Leach said. “He took on a whole new life.”

The physical store has remained the same. The ramshackle ranch building doesn’t look like a growing fashion brand. Chances are the trip to the store on a dirt road will include stopping for horses and crushing horse droppings.

There aren’t many signs that you have arrived at Ranchlands Mercantile. A small sign hanging above the door is barely readable as the white paint indicating “Leather Shop” has faded over the years. The red paint on the outside has also faded.

It is not a place where customers come to browse. It is a place of work, as evidenced by the tools arranged on the walls and the products in progress.

Across the room, passing by the dog Lola, this is where they keep the stool.

In case you could forget, this is ranch life. And it’s a chosen life and fiercely loved by Leach and Phillips and their families who all live in the Chico Basin with other staff. For Leach, she knew she wanted to stay in the family business without being a traditional breeder. This led to his current role.

Phillips, who grew up in Illinois with a love for horseback riding, first appeared as a seasonal worker.

“It was so much deeper than ‘Come ride in a nice place’,” she said.

She chose to join the ranch instead of going to vet school. Part of that is because she fell in love with the mission and the heart of Ranchlands. She also fell in love with Duke the Fourth, the son of the founder of Ranchland, to whom she is married. She is pregnant with the next Duke.

She has played an important role in the growth of leather goods, where she and a team of all-female artisans spend their days in a trade as traditional as breeding itself.

“It’s part of the culture of the old ranches to have their own leather shops,” Leach said. “We didn’t always think of it as something that could really help. “

They have an anecdote on hand to make this point.

While Phillips mastered leatherwork, she made herself a simple knotted bracelet. She wore it for two years before she and Leach thought they should start making them in the store and selling them. The bracelets, priced at $ 35, are now one of their most popular items. They get ideas directly from the breeders and what they wear. Some bags, says Phillips, are just a step or two away from being saddle-ready.

The popularity of everything shows that Ranchland Mercantile has something that every brand wants: a good, authentic story.

“The fact that we didn’t create it to make money makes it easier to make money, if that makes sense,” Leach said. “People resonate with what we do and why. “

And the store is making some much-needed extra cash, she said.

It’s not just history that sells. The quality is unmatched. They confidently say these products will last a lifetime, if not longer. The leather itself does not come from their ranch; most of it comes from Horween Leather in Chicago, which is the oldest family-owned tannery in the country. The makers of the store turn this leather into items that have the potential to be lasting family heirlooms.

A few steps from the store is its shipping department: a shipping container without air conditioning and with just enough room for one or two employees at a time and boxes of return product.

Looking around, Leach talks about the little details that make these hats and bags unique in any other store. She also mentions that she has been thinking about how to meet the demand. This will not include moving the leather goods off the ranch.

“It wouldn’t make sense,” she said. “This is who we are.”
