The passerby who fell over the body of a woman – she was missing a head, arms and legs – in a trash bag in a shopping cart on a busy street outside a Brooklyn store told the police that he first noticed it on his way to a friend’s house and when it was still there on his way home about an hour later, he decided to open it, a senior official said Friday. of the NYPD with direct knowledge of the investigation.

The man, who was the one who called 911 about the grisly find at the corner of Atlantic and Pennsylvania avenues, just outside a construction safety equipment store next to a carpet store , told cops he passed through the area initially around 12:30 p.m. Thursday. and decided to see what was in the bag as he returned around 1:40 a.m.

The bag was not attached. It was only canceled, the senior NYPD official said, the man reported. He reached inside. First he smelled a roll of toilet paper.

Then he opened the bag and saw the torso. He immediately called 911, the official said.

Detectives are trying to use DNA to identify the victim, given the lack of anything that matches dental records or fingerprints. There were no identifying marks on the dismembered body, with no tattoos or birthmarks. At this point, all they know is that the body is that of an adult female, a police source said.

The medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine how she died.

In the meantime, detectives are canvassing CCTV cameras in the area in hopes of seeing who dropped the cart on the spot. The city’s sanitation department has been ordered not to pick up trash within a three-block radius of the crime scene, with the NYPD working to bring in a cadaver dog to check the trash bags nearby for any additional body part.
