Quirky Cats in Hudson County: Our Readers Share Fun Facts About Their Pets
International Cat Day is August 8, and there’s no better way to celebrate than recognizing some of the beautiful felines in the Hudson County area. Cats are both wonderful and hilarious creatures. One minute they’re purring and snuggling up to you — the next they’re doing flips inside a cardboard box. We asked our readers in our Hoboken + Jersey City Insiders Facebook Group to submit photos of their pet cats as well as fun and original anecdotes. To celebrate International Cat Day, we’ve compiled these cats + their quirks below. Read on for a list of some local Hoboken + Jersey City cats.

Dusty, Will Steal Your Hot Dog – Property of Sam + Danny
This beautiful gray kitty is a sweetheart – although she has a pretty funny quirk. “Dusty is the perfect cat and has a few quirks – the funniest part is that she LOVES hot dogs and will do anything to steal one from you,” her owners Sam and Danny said.
Millie, gets night zooms – Property of Erika
This blue-eyed beauty is rather shy and is a big fan of the aptly named cat nap. However, according to her owner, Erika, she gets up at 11 p.m. sharp every night and that’s when she’s wildly energetic + wants to play.
Ollie (aka Booba), undergoing an identity crisis — Property of Laina

This one had us all laughing – meet Ollie, or should we say, Booba. “He barely responds to his name and mostly responds to ‘Booba’,” shared his owner, Laina. “… Whoops !”
Gardenia Addicted to Nacho Cheese Doritos — Property of Amanda

Gardenia, like many of us, has a bit of a Nacho Cheese Doritos addiction. Oh, and she howls like a dog, according to her parent, Amanda.

With such a handsome and hilarious face, we don’t need to say much more. Her owner, Amelia, cited Ava’s tendency to always “go crazy”.
Justice, Will Wake You Chewing Your Hair — Property of Christiana

This kitty, Justice, is beautifully harnessed, but her funniest quirk is that she loves chewing on her mom, Christiana,’s hair in the morning. It is certainly an effective alarm clock.
Arty, will mistake your head for a pillow – Property of Colleen

Arty may be cute, but he still has a hard time learning what a pillow is. “His favorite place to sleep is on your head,” said owner Colleen. “He also has full conversations with humans at all times of the day.”

Cookie is a lively cat – and he puts his intelligence to his odd advantage. “He can open Trader Joe’s bottle of olive oil on the kitchen counter, then lick the oil off!” its owner, Winni, said H.G..
Holly, a master of disguise – Possessed by Liz

Holly, a rescue cat, is obsessed with dressing up in adorable costumes. Her owner, Liz, also told us she learned to fist pump in exchange for treats.

Heathcliff is a silly, cuddly boy who is a big fan of the fridge. His owners, Lana + Andy, said he learned most of his begging for food from his new brother, Theo. Which brings us to…

Theo is Heathcliff’s mischievous brother. “Theo monstrously yells at us when he wants dinner and constantly asks for food!” said Theo’s owners. “He taught Heathcliff how to meow loudly and beg.” Theo is also a fan of grabbing the couch for life while dozing off.
Nelly, thinks she’s an egg – Property of Lauren

Nelly loves egg cartons, walking outside, doing yoga or taking naps in the sun. “To show her love, she butts!” its owner, Lauren, said. “She’s super soft and very dog-like and snuggles up to me every night.” She even has a instagram.
Squirrel, obsessed with Rutgers – Possessed by Alex

This multicolored beauty is called Squirrel and just celebrated her birthday. “She loves walking around in her backpack, eating treats in Elysian Park and is a huge Rutgers fan,” owner Alex said.
Henry, may be an undercover human – Possessed by Jennifer

Henry is one of 3, and he and his siblings all look like dogs. “They all follow me everywhere, are super friendly, LOVE cuddles and pets and get along great with other cats/dogs!” Jennifer, Henry’s landlady, told us. Henry also has human qualities, especially the way he lounges on his back like a person.

Princess Lilly, The Gossip Girl – Property of Meredith

Lilly has yet to meet anyone she doesn’t like. She loves carrying her babies (stuffed animals) at 2am, meowing as loud as she can – but Lilly’s landlady told us of a funnier quirk: “She also likes to gossip + always comes in the room when she hears my roommates and I gossiping about everything.”
Jeffica Simpson, likes to bite chins — Property of Molly

Jeffica Simpson is a 2 year old cutie who is incredibly sweet and goes by Jeff. As for his fun traits, Jeff’s owner shared with H.G. that “she gently bites my chin when she’s sleepy”.
Fitness Enthusiast Chandler + Joey Loves to Jump — Property of Melissa

Chandler (Tuxedo Cat) and Joey (Tabby Cat) are two cats who clearly like to cuddle up. Their owner, Melissa, shared a fun fact about each of her cats: “Chandler can often be found weighing himself on my scale and he’s definitely ruined my Fitbit app, and Joey likes to throw himself all 17 pounds on my sleeping body every morning. to wake me up.”

Waffle is an adorable kitty who has two funny traits: “He loves chasing ice cubes around the apartment and stealing my work chair every time I get up,” said owner Julia. H.G..
