Every mid-May, the birds migrate to the unique habitats of Detroit Lakes region. Tall grass prairies merge with deciduous and coniferous forests, resulting in over 250 species of birds. Go bird watching at the 25th edition Bird Festival May 19-21.
Whether you’re looking for a scenic walk or an adventurous hike, start at one of Detroit’s Lakes Parks and Preserves. You have plenty of room to explore on the North Country National Scenic Trail. Other hiking options include Dunton Locks County Park Trails, Sucker Creek Preserve, Detroit Lakes Wetland Management District Prairie Swamp Trail, and Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge.
Ride a bike
Bike the Heartland Multi-Use Trail from the Detroit Lakes east five miles along the newly opened paved family trail. Drive through woods and meadows to a scenic view of Acorn Lake near Frazee. Detroit’s warmer lake months unveil a world of mountain biking. Feel the rush on the trails and wooden ramps, and get some air on the elevated features of Detroit Mountain, where you can rent your bike. The family-friendly Maplelag cross-country ski resort north of the Detroit Lakes has miles of trails to explore. Need a new bike or an accessory? Stop at the DL Bike Shop on Washington Avenue in Detroit Lakes before your adventure.
Hop on horseback for a ride with a view at Timberline Ranch, just minutes from the Detroit Lakes. Rides begin at age 5 and the horses can accommodate anyone weighing 225 pounds or less. Daily trots are available at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Guides lead you through a beautiful wooded gorge and along hills for panoramic views. In its 25th year, Timberline Ranch is open May through September.
